The winning Mercedes 300 SLR of Stirling Moss and navigator Denis Jenkinson is shown negotiating a level crossing between Pescara and Rome. Aided by Jenkinson’s pioneering navigation techniques, the pair won the great road race in just over 10 hours at an average speed of 98 mph a record that was never equalled.
